School was a really difficult experience for me. I struggled all throughout my schooling career. I had multiple undiagnosed learning ‘disabilities’ and my grades and performance reflected that. I didn’t wear the right clothes. I wasn’t good at sports. Big groups and small talk was never my thing. I didn’t fit in. So when Carol Coutts, a music teacher at Basinview Public School, approached me about writing a School Our Song for her school… I couldn’t WAIT to sink my teeth in. She asked me to write an Our Song that would highlight Basinview’s values of inclusion and community. She asked me to write the Our Song that I wish I had been able to sing when I was going to school. I am so proud to present Everyone Belongs. I want every single kid to hear this message. Everyone Belongs. Our skin colours, economic backgrounds, religious beliefs, clothes, learning abilities, physical abilities, home situations, struggles, and triumphs are what make us all special. When we bring everything we are to the table and are VALUED, we can learn from each other, help each other, and see the world in ways we had never thought of. We’re all stars and we’re all special. That’s what makes us all unique. We’re all dreaming of potential. That’s what makes us all believe. We’ve all got futures. They start today. We’re finding our own way We’re all different as can be. That’s what makes us all the same. Big shout out to Carol Coutts, and the kids and staff of Basinview who inspired these words and then learned and helped me and my band perform Everyone Belongs.
