More than 100,000 adults and children visit the emergency room each year nationwide after fainting. Health experts at Lee Memorial Health System say about three to five percent of pediatric presentations are for syncope. According to Dr. Eric Eason, a pediatric cardiologist with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, syncope is another term for passing out or when a child loses consciousness suddenly. “Sometimes syncope can occur suddenly or it can be precipitated by certain symptoms like dizziness, nausea, sweating, not feeling well, and vision changes.” Dr. Eason says it can happen in children as young as two years old. Delaney Eveloff started showing symptoms when she was just four years old. “I was there when it happened. She just passed out at school. She was four years old. We didn’t have any symptoms beforehand” said Nicole Eveloff, Delaney’s mom. She said Delaney was unconscious for about three minutes. Before the week ended, Delaney fainted three more times. “It can be very often” said Dr. Eason. “Sometimes children can complain of daily symptoms, where they are passing out on daily basis. Other times it depends on what you’re doing.” Dr. Eason says syncope can be triggered by standing up too quickly, physical activity, hot showers, or standing too long. What triggers the symptoms will help determine the cause and type of syncope. “There can be lots of different causes. Congenital heart defects, inborn errors where the electricity doesn’t go through the heart normally, there can be dehydration, valve issues. There can be many different explanations for syncope” said Dr. Eason. When diagnosing syncope, health experts say it’s important to know family history. Delaney later found out syncope runs in her family. She was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope, where she suddenly loses blood flow to the brain. It developed after birth as she got older. Now, at 10 years old, she wears a heart monitor and hasn’t had any more fainting spells.
