The Ravens were from Danbury Connecticut starting in the summer of 1963. Overtime members of the group were Jeff Annunziata - drummer Ritchie O Connor - rhythm guitarist and vocals Led Brent - lead guitarist and vocals John Anthony - bassist and vocals Joe Gracia - rhythm guitarist and vocals Bruce Bogie - lead guitarist and vocals Originally forming at The Tor-Ks, the band started playing in Jeff’s garage. Soon they were practicing regularly and that’s when they changed their name to The Ravens at the start of 1964. The group began playing at various events at the start of The British Invasion and The Ravens became recognised among local area bands and they soon acquired a manger named Bert Clark. However towards the end of the year Les wanted to move on and so he left the band and thus Bruce Bogie took his place and the band took a drive to Florida between Christmas and New Years to see if they could find a place to play. Soon enough they hit Daytona Beach but were immediately stopped by the police who wanted to know what they were doing. But after showing their IDs the police let the group go and Bert found them a couple of clubs to play. The Ravens were soon playing every week at dances and this intrigued record producers to sign them up for a record deal. The band recorded a cover of “Working For The Man” and the fire original called “Sleepless Nights” (which was covered by a band known as “Bram Rigg Set” in 1966) the single was released on Haven Records in 1965 and did very well. (To quote John Anthony “It was a good feeling hearing our record on the juke boxes at the local hangouts.”) In 1966 Ritchie O Connor would receive draft notice and despite John encouraging him to go to a College and keep playing with the band, Ritchie had made up his mind and left the band with his replacement being Joe Gracia. Towards the end of the year the band began performing at Todd’s Supper Club and later on began performing at a place called The Zoo in New Jersey. The band even got to help The Doors out during a performance when The Doors road manager asked #theravens if he could borrow one of their monitor speakers for The Doors to use, and the band agreed. In 1967 the band recorded two demos for Bell Sound Studios Inc. which were #myman and “What You Want” which were released as an #acetate they continued playing into 1968, but they were slowly loosing some of their audience and with less people to absorb sound they play too loud which resulted in the owners cutting the power. Then Ritchie O Connor came back (it had been 2 years since the band last saw him) and he rejoined The Ravens and they became and five man band, only for Bruce to leave the group to join an alternative style band. The absence of a lead guitarist (and a missing voice) left a big hole in their sound and the band were unable to continue recording and the band went into a mature direction and had no aspiration to seek a replacement. The band soon split in 1969 with many of the members going on to live normal lives and have normal jobs. The band would reform again in the 1970s, 80s, 90s and even today. Jeff Annunziata died of a heart attack on July 15th 2002 and Ritchie O Connor passed away on January 27th 2014 after a long and courageous battle against lung cancer Information provided by John Anthony Released 1967 Label Bell Sound Studios, Inc.
