The Giant Sunflower were a psychedelic garage rock band from Los Angeles active from 1966 - 1968, with members being Terry Clements - lead guitarist and vocals Eddie Hoh - drummer Val Garay - rhythm guitarist and vocals Margo Phillips (aka Patti Phillips) - vocalist Richard Dey - bassist Richard Dey was previously in a band named The Wilde Knights that recorded “Just Like Me” (written by Dey) which would be covered by Paul Revere & The Raiders The bands first single was “February Sunshine” (written by Garay and Pat Vegas) and released on the Take 6 label in 1967. This got the attention of Lou Adler who ran a record label named Ode Records and contacted the band (Eddie was also the drummer for The Mamas & The Papas at the same time and that was kind of how they ended up at Lou’s house to audition) As Margo recalls, Lou Adler was sitting on the couch and with Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty. And after some negotiations the band were signed up to Ode and were told to record a new version of “February Sunshine” which would end up releasing on Ode Records in May of 1967. The single would prove to be quite successful and have many re-releases on Columbia and CBS. However at the same time the bands first single faded into obscurity while it was on it’s way up the charts They often performed live at The Whisky (a Go Go) on Sunset Strip with Lou Adler being the co-owner of the club, and he booked Giant Sunflower to perform opening acts for Van Morrison, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Steppenwolf and many others. They also did a concert with The Buffalo Springfield. In October of that same year the band recorded a second single for the label which was a cover of The Miracles “What’s So Good About Good-Bye”which didn’t have the same promotional steam behind it. Margo thinks that Columbia lost interest, and after a Japanese release of “February Sunshine” and “What’s So Good About Goodbye” #thegiantsunflower split in 1968 Interestingly another band known as The Rose Garden recorded a cover of “February Sunshine” in 1968 #eddiehoh (known in the drumming world as Fast Eddie Hoh) became a studio session drummer and passed away on November 7th 2015 Terry Clements joined Gordon Lightfoot’s band in 1970. And died of a stroke on February 20th 2011 Val Garay would become a producer, engineer and mixer and continued in songwriting writing songs for artists like Kim Carnes, and is still alive age 83 Margo Phillips became a part of a Buddhist group (possibly a cult) and disappeared from the music scene It is unknown about Richard Dey Information provided by Margo (Patti) Phillips Released May 1967 Label Ode Records - ZS7 #102 A side February Sunshine B side Big Apple
