This video focuses on taking the emissive part of a material, made in Substance Painter, and using it to give the impression of translucence in Unreal Engine 4. Translucent shaders are more resource intensive than opaque so having alternatives to achieve the same effect can be important. However, we still wanted to be able to create the look of translucency, so we found a way to do it by using only the default opaque shader inside of Unreal’s Material Editor. In the second part of this video series, we will build on to the bump offset technique from the previous video. We do this by showing you how to use a fresnel node to mask the edges of your emissive texture. This makes the intensity of the light is fade as the mesh surface bends away from the camera. Mike McLaughlin, one of our artists, will demonstrate the technique of using Unreal’s Fresnel Node to make it look like there is a light bulb shining from within the center of a lampshade.
