“The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle” was the theme song for the American sitcom “Gilligan’s Island.” The music and lyrics were written by Sherwood Schwartz (creator and producer of the show) and George Wyle. During the first season (1964-1965), future film composer John Williams (often listed as Johnny Williams in the credits) composed the show’s incidental music. “Gilligan’s Island” aired on CBS for three seasons (1964-1967) and starred Bob Denver as Gilligan, Alan Hale Jr, Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson, and Dawn Wells. Episodes of the show follow the adventures of a two-man crew with five passengers on the charter boat SS Minnow. When the “three-hour tour” from Honolulu encounters a typhoon, the SS Minnow is shipwrecked on an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean. During the series, the United States Coast Guard would occasionally receive telegrams from concerned citizens, who apparently did not realize it was a scripted show and wanted the Coast Guard to rescue the people on the deserted island. In this episode, the shipwrecked castaways are entertained by Pizzazz Capt. Charles Manning, who finds a Steinway piano on the deserted island and proceeds to improvise the theme song, “The Ballad of Gilligan’s Isle.”
