Creative Flourishing: Examining the Impact of Arts Engagement on Well-Being Among Black Americans (Mahlobo) | This presentation explores the relationship between arts engagement and flourishing among Black Americans through two research studies. The first study investigates the state of the literature regarding the impact of participation in the arts and humanities on psychological, physical, interpersonal, transcendent, and collective well-being, highlighting positive and negative outcomes related to arts engagement (e.g., increased social connectedness, positive racial identity development, increased aggression, or decreased self esteem). The second study through survey insights also examines the role of engagement in various art domains such as music, visual arts, and writing and literature, in enhancing flourishing, and barriers to engagement. Together, these studies underscore the vital role of the arts in promoting holistic well-being and flourishing in Black communities, offering insights into how culturally relevant art forms can be leveraged as tools for empowerment and personal growth. Developing Inclusive Museum Programs: Integrating Arts Beyond the Visual (Morillo) | This presentation examines innovative approaches to inclusive program development in arts museums by integrating multiple art domains, such as spoken word poetry, music, and performance, to enhance the accessibility of visual arts. It highlights strategies for engaging diverse audiences by creating multimodal experiences that resonate with different cultural and social backgrounds. Additionally, the talk will discuss the work that the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia has done around centering mindfulness, trauma informed practice, and commitment to radical accessibility for staff and audiences. This talk will demonstrate how these integrative approaches to the visual arts and creativity can cultivate flourishing, break down barriers, foster transformational encounters with art, and create a more inclusive museum environment.
