The Creativity Choice: From Having Ideas to Making them Happen (Pringle) | In this presentation I draw on the science of creativity as a process of not just having original ideas, but turning them into performances and products. Making ideas happen starts with a choice. As many decisions, this one is influenced by our emotions (e.g., from anxiety-provoking uncertainty to creative confidence). Once we decide to act, we need strategies that help us make it through the long process of creation and successfully make it through its challenges and obstacles. Because the greatest challenges of creative work are about managing the emotional ups and downs – from reputational and intellectual risks to frustrating creative blocks – emotion abilities are key to success. There is no roadmap with a set of step-by-step instructions for creativity. But knowing the lay of the land provided by the science of creativity can equip creators to forge their own paths. Mood Repair: Art and Making as Tool for Emotional Well-Being (Fullenkamp) | Art, Craft, Maker - whatever you call it, hands-on, skill-based creative activities are common informal learning experiences in museums, libraries and schools because they are highly flexible, open-ended and adaptable. But did you know when the focus is on the creative process rather than the product, these activities are good for the soul too? In this session, Anne will share her experiences adapting art and design practices for use in libraries, schools, and other unexpected settings, as a means to provide mood-altering, socializing opportunities, and emotional support for people of all ages and abilities. By shifting the mindset of what it means to be an artist or maker, we can look at the experience of art making as an exercise to improve your well-being and build emotional strength and resilience
