The Art of Medicine: Designing Museum-based Initiatives for Medical Trainees | Creative and diverse arts and humanities-based interventions are increasingly integrated into contemporary medical curricula to combat a growing sense of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and lack of meaning in work among medical trainees. Faculty at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and museum educators at the Philadelphia Museum of Art collaborated to develop a novel program for medical residents to build slow looking and communication tools through established museum-based pedagogies. In this conversation, we will discuss our experience designing this museum-based program, review the effects of this arts-based initiative through the lens of the positive humanities, and more broadly speak to the role of art museums and the medical humanities for transforming clinical practice.
