I promised back in my Lone Caner response ( • The Ritsuko Gambit (A Response to Lance Su... ) that I would play the tit for tat game with Ferrand/Planteray, i.e. start buying and reviewing more releases if they ever cleaned up their behavior and/or put out bottlings that looked compelling and featured good pricing and were actually available to me. And... okay, they're still battling strong rum GIs (to the point that the Jamaican Supreme Court is now taking a case, https://www.jamaicaobserver.com/2025/... ), they're still not being forthcoming about their relation to the "Pierre de Segonzac" family, and then there's the sugar and the finishes and their press releases always remain a little cringe. But on the other hand there have been a whole lot of bottlings dropping recently that look suspiciously solid on paper: good presentation (no "dosage"), lots of age, the usual questionable barrel choices but deployed better than previously, and very very well priced. And so I've bought one to try: it's a 15-odd year old Fiji that went into an ex-Islay barrel for four of those years, and it's... $45. We love Fijian rum from South Pacific Distillery (now "Rum Co. of Fiji" 😑), as reviewed previously at • Farewell to Fiji: Blackadder '09 8yo, Vali... , so it seems perfect for a test run. But our peaty rum needs a sparring partner, and I've got a sample of just the one: an even older, hazmat-strength Fiji bottled by Wu Dram Clan and the FRC folks. The much cheaper Planteray doesn't need to win, of course, but let's see if it can get close: Planteray Fiji Islands 2009, Cask no. 15/18 for Binny's (South Pacific Distillery/Rum Co. of Fiji, pot- and column-distilled molasses, tropically aged 9 years in ex-bourbon and continentally aged 2 years 4 months in "Ferrand cask" and 4 years and 6 months in ex-Kilchoman, bottled 2025; 55.2% ABV), 85+/100 "Dos Delinquentes" Fiji 2006 17 Year Old Single Cask Rum (South Pacific Distillery, bottled by FRC/Flensburg Rum Company and Wu Dram Clan; pot-distilled molasses, aged 11 years in Fiji and 6 years in Europe, bottled 2024; 72.5% ABV), 87+/100 The Delinquentes bottling is on the more Foursquarey side of Fiji, all Southern desserts and coffee and tea and tobacco, albeit it's a more high-toned, aromatic example of the breed. Improves with water; kind of a Fiji for Port Mourant fans, if you get what I mean. But the big news here is that the Planteray is actually good. Yes the cask is overwhelming - it presents like peaty whisky with a side of cola and licorice more than a rum - and yes I don't like it as much as that RA Elements thing ( • Burke's Elements Jamaica Rum Reviews x3: W... ), but taken on its own merits, yeah, this is compelling and it's good value. So good job Planteray, you get a gold star! ⭐ You're still not where I want you but at least the trend line is up!
