Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Jordan is far more strategic than it appears on paper. Scheduled from 15 to 16 December, this will be Modi’s first full-fledged bilateral trip to Amman — and it comes at a moment when West Asia is facing one of its most volatile periods in years. With the Gaza conflict reshaping regional alignments, Jordan’s political role has become increasingly important. India and Jordan are marking 75 years of diplomatic relations, and the two sides are expected to review the “entire gamut” of ties. Jordan, though less discussed than other West Asian states, holds significant regional weight: it is a frontline state in the Israel-Palestine conflict, custodian of Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem and home to a large Palestinian refugee population. Modi’s visit signals India’s intention to deepen ties with a monarchy that often acts as a stabilising force in the region. Economically, the relationship is equally strong. India is Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner, with nearly USD 2.9 billion in trade in 2023–24. India relies on Jordan for essential fertilisers and phosphates, while Amman is emerging as a promising destination for Indian investment in fintech, energy, automobiles and manufacturing. With IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor) expected to pass through Jordan, the country’s strategic value is only rising. Jordan has also supported India on issues like Kashmir, adding political goodwill to an already stable partnership.
