A special edition of Newsnight was added to the schedules on Saturday 3 May to cover the aftermath of the general election (note the continuity announcement at the end, apologising to those expecting the billed programme). The new Cabinet, now completed, are sworn in as Privy Councillors; Martha Kearney reports from Buckingham Palace and discusses its shape. Then comes the news of Michael Heseltine's ill health and decision not to stand for the leadership; Mark Mardell covers the impending Conservative leadership election. There is a round table discussion with grassroots Conservatives - including future Minister Robert Halfon. Then comes a report on the 'unlikely lads' - Labour and Liberal Democrat MPs in previously safe Conservative seats. John Major's political obituary is offered by Michael Crick and debated by Tony Howard and Norman Fowler. Unfortunately there is some tape damage in the first few minutes - "we hope it doesn't harm your enjoyment of the programme".
