By Daniel Zuckerman and Karrie Allen Columbia-Greene Media OLD CHATHAM – A fire at 482 Ford Road in Old Chatham claimed the life of an 85-year-old man, injured three others and left the large home in ruins. The home was fully involved by the time fire crews arrived, Tri-Village Fire Chief Garry Smith said while still on the scene of the fire at 11:30 a.m. Tri-Village Fire Company was dispatched by Columbia County 911 at 3:20 a.m. for an initial alarm activation. A second dispatch confirmed it was a working structure fire, he said. The home is on a long driveway off a dirt road, so setting up for water supply was a challenge, the chief said. The water on the trucks was adequate for fighting what they could, but not for saving the house. It was a “defensive operation,” Smith said, adding that they had “not completed recovery.” There were six people in the home at the time of the fire, he said. Three people were treated; two of them were transported to Albany Medical Center to be treated for burns, according to County 911. No firefighters were injured and there were no animals, Smith added. At least nine fire companies in-county responded with tankers, with mutual aid equipment and man power from additional in-county departments and from Rensselaer County, he said. Chatham Rescue and Valatie Rescue squads responded and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was on scene. The fire is completely out and the Columbia County Cause and Origin Team and the New York State Office of Fire and Prevention Control are on the scene investigating, Smith said.
