THE DISMEMBERMENT OF PENTHEUS (2023) Sam Chambers

The inspiration for this piece was drawn from the pages of The Bacchae, the last and greatest work by the Athenian playwright Euripides. The play recounts the downfall of Pentheus, the king of Thebes, and his mother Agave, for their slights against Dionysus, the god of wine. Through various machinations of the plot Pentheus finds himself the subject of a sparagmos – the ritual tearing apart of an animal for sacrifice – at the hands of his mother and the women of Thebes. The idea of dismemberment informs much of the music of the piece, as different themes are presented and then torn apart, with the resulting motivic fragments turned backwards, upside down, and stretched out before being reconstructed.
