"Emperata Overture" by Claude T. Smith arranged by Connor Williams for Brass Ensemble and Percussion In searching online, I was surprised to find out that perhaps one of Smith's most signature works for wind band did not have a brass ensemble arrangement! Thus the piece came to me as something natural to create an arrangement that blends and fits incredibly well for the reduced ensemble. This arrangement is scored for a large brass ensemble with a percussion section from the original piece including: Piccolo Trumpet, Trumpets 1-4, Flugelhorn/Trumpet 5, F Horns 1-4, Trombones 1-3, Euphonium, Tuba, Tom-Toms, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbals (Crash/Suspended), Woodblock, Chimes, Glockenspiel, and Timpani. The original solos for Flute and Oboe have been written in the Piccolo Trumpet and 1st Trumpet parts. It is preferable to have all trumpet parts covered as they all have crucial harmonic lines that are mainly independent of each other.
