The occasion of the teaching: During the time of the Blessed one , the fully Enlightened Buddha, Gautama Buddha was residing at the great monastery of Jetavana in Savatthi. At that time, many monks were discussing religious practices. some praised severe asceticism- fasting, sleeping on thorns, or enduring heat and cold. others emphasized rituals, sacrifices, or complex philosophical views. lay devotees, hearing these debates, became confused. They approached the Blessed one and respectfully asked: Bhante, among all these practices, what is truly that the essence of your teachings? What is the heart of the Buddha's dispensation? The Buddha, full of compassion, did not speak in complicated philosophy. Instead, he gave a simple, universal summary- a teaching valid not only for his time but for all Buddhas of the past and future.
