The Story Behind This Verse During the time of the Blessed One in Savatthi, at Jetavana Monastery, a group of monks were discussing how fortunate they were. They reflected on their lives before ordination—how they had wandered in ignorance, chasing wealth, pleasure, and praise. One monk said, “Friends, how rare it must be to meet a Buddha! How many beings are lost in darkness?” The Blessed One, Gautama Buddha, overheard their discussion. He gathered the monks and asked, “Bhikkhus, what were you discussing?” They explained their reflection on their rare good fortune. The Buddha then said: “Bhikkhus, it is indeed rare. Imagine a blind turtle who lives in the vast ocean. Once every hundred years, it rises to the surface. There is also a yoke floating on the ocean, tossed by the winds. What do you think—would that turtle place its neck through the yoke?” The monks replied, “Very unlikely, Bhante.” The Buddha said, “Even more rare than that is rebirth as a human being. More rare still is hearing the Saddhamma. And rarer still is the arising of a Tathāgata in the world.” Then he recited Verse 182. The Deeper Meaning This verse reminds us: Human birth (manussapaṭilābha) is precious because it offers the balance of suffering and wisdom needed for liberation. Hearing the True Dhamma (saddhammassavana) is rare because many live without exposure to liberating teachings. The arising of a Buddha happens only after countless aeons. The teaching of Dhamma requires compassion, wisdom, and capable listeners.
