Physical Graffiti had it’s 50th anniversary last week and I saw many post on social media about it. This is my favourite rock album of all time, so I thought it would make sense to post something important from this masterpiece. In Yy Time of Dying immediately came to mind. Hearing this for the first time was a complete game changer for me. It was heavy, mysterious and completely transcendent. I still don’t know what to make of it. On the surface you can call it a Blues/Rock fusion but it’s so much more that that. Led Zeppelin had the unique ability to transcend labels. To call them heavy Metal doesn’t work either, I would call them a unique musical experience, like a soundtrack to a movie that has many different styles that all fit together. I love it when bands and their fans think about musical creation in terms of the band collective as opposed to a specific brand/or style. Musical categorization has become a standard based on playlist curation but it goes back to the days of dividing music into categories at the Record stores. When I listen to the Beatles, I’m listening to “The Beatles”. You can call it pop music but what’s the point, it diminishes its artistic value. When I listen to Led Zeppelin, I’m listening to “Led Zeppelin”, and more important I’m listening to Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti. The album is a very important and unique piece of Art that needs to stand alone from everything else the band did. I really cherish my childhood reactions to music because it was not clouded by other people’s opinions or from my own over intellectualizing. I thought this album was the coolest thing I’ve ever heard several decades ago and I still feel the same way. I thought I would include the intro of the song because it technically is a guitar solo. This is also a situation where the TAB is really just a rough guide. I would not follow it note for note. Jimmy Page is a loose player and slide guitar playing in an open tuning in general is even looser. I purposely tried to not play the solo note for note but I followed its structure as closely as possible. Using your ears as the primary source to learn this solo will be much more effective. It also helps me to think of the solo in terms of sections. If you think of it as 7-10 different parts connected together it will be easier to memorize the whole thing Your support is always very helpful.
