MAP FORUM - 24 November 2020 Catherine de' Medici: Ten Revealing Letters about an Accidental Queen Catherine de’ Medici (1519-89), as the last legitimate child of the senior branch of the Florentine banking family, was destined to play a role in their quest to rise to the ruling class by whatever means possible. For women, this meant an advantageous marriage and with Catherine’s cousin as Pope, the family could aim high, securing a union with a younger son in the French royal family. As such, she might have simply lived as a decoration at that Italophile court, but a series of accidents brought her to the center of European politics. Some letters, by her and others, will reveal how she negotiated the changing aspects of her role as fiancée, mother, and queen; her contributions to diplomacy; and examples of the role of portraits at court. Dr. Sheila ffolliott is Professor Emerita in the Department of History and Art History at George Mason University and has served on the Board of the Medici Archive Project since 2013. Her research has focused on Renaissance women as art patrons and collectors, in particular Catherine de’ Medici; her current research focuses specifically on Catherine’s relationship with the portrait. She was recently part of a German-funded working group on the patronage activity of Medici Women, resulting in several publications. Earlier this year, her essay “La Miniatrice di Madama: Giovanna Garzoni in Savoia,” was published in the exhibition catalog La Grandezza dell’Universo nell’arte di Giovanna Garzoni (edited by Sheila Barker, Sillabe and Palazzo Pitti, 2020).
