MAP FORUM - 9 February 2021 Louis XIV and The Power of Women One of the world's most important early histories of women is also its least known. Minimally catalogued and virtually forgotten at the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale in Florence, a handwritten manuscript titled Della Dignità, & Nobiltà Delle Donne (On the Dignity & Nobility of Women) fills thousands of folios divided into 36 tomes. Written around 1615-1620 by Cristofano Bronzini, a prelate and a secretary of Cardinal Carlo de’ Medici, this immense work celebrates the accomplishments of women from Antiquity to Bronzini's time. He had cultivated friendships with several women described in his text, including the artists Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, and Giovanna Garzoni; the composer Francesca Caccini; and the writer Lucrezia Marinelli. Dr. Sheila Barker's talk will explore the manuscript's contents, the author's motivations, the Roman Inquisition's attempts to censor this work, and the ongoing efforts to bring it to press, as the author always dreamed might happen.
