On Saturday the 14th of June 2025, the first stadium event after the opening of the Thornlie-Cockburn Line was held, meaning that the new stadium operations were seen for the first time. Firstly, this meant Mandurah to Perth Stadium direct trains running via the new Thornlie-Cockburn Link, stopping at all stations to Cockburn Central on the Mandurah Line, then Ranford Road, Nicholson Road, Thornlie, and Perth Stadium. In this video we take the first ever service to complete this journey along with many other enthusiasts, departing Mandurah at 2:45PM, filming all the way from Cockburn to Perth Stadium. This is a much needed connection for the people living in the southern suburbs to easily access events at Optus Stadium without having to travel through the city or transfer to buses at Canning Bridge. Unfortunately, the change also means that train frequencies between Cockburn Central and the city along the Mandurah Line have been reduced to every 15 minutes instead of every 7 as it usually was before events. On top of these direct trains, trains on the Thornlie-Cockburn Line are upgraded to be 6-car for the majority of the day on event days. On this occasion it was primarily 6-car B-Series although there were also some 6-car A-Series which were nice to see on a line other than the Yanchep or Mandurah Line (where they no longer run anyway). However, since there are still 4-car platforms present at McIver, Claisebrook, Burswood and Victoria Park, these trains had to run express through these stations, on a new pattern dubbed pattern "TP". Only the Armadale Line Cannington Shuttles served these stations during this time. We also take a journey on one of the express trains and record the special announcements related to the service in both male and female voice in both directions; it's been a while since we've had a proper scheduled normal express train in Perth!
