The year 1828--the last in Franz Schubert's short life-- was full of sorrow with the death of Beethoven the year before, and was over-shadowed by his own deepening health concerns. Yet, despite all this, Schubert composed some of the most magnificent music of his lifetime. In this two-part series, Joy McIntyre and Joseph Holt will take you on a journey through Schubert's glorious final year, with narrative and musical performances. The Performers and Presenters: Joy McIntyre, soprano, has performed with major European opera houses under distinguished conductors like Wolfgang Sawallisch, Marek Janowski, and Carlos Kleiber. Renowned for roles such as Ortrud (Lohengrin), Kostelnicka (Jenufa), and the Dyer’s Wife (Die Frau ohne Schatten), she also starred in a notable Lohengrin production staged by Friedelind Wagner, the composer’s granddaughter. An Associate Professor Emerita of Boston University and former Chair of the Voice Department, Ms. McIntyre has taught at the University of Tampa, Utah State University, University of Miami Program at Salzburg and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. She holds degrees from Oberlin Conservatory and New England Conservatory, where she was an Emma Eames Scholar. Dr. Joseph Holt pianist and conductor, is the producer and host for Sarasota Institute of Lifetime Learning’s Music Monday programs, musical conversations with artists from around the world that offer insight into the lives of leading musicians. He was Artistic Director for the Choral Artists of Sarasota and served as Director of Artist Programs for the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota. The Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota recognized his achievements in the arts with the Artistic Achievement Award in 2017. Before moving to Sarasota, he was the principal pianist with The United States Army Chorus in Washington, DC, performing for US Presidents and dignitaries from around the world. He also held the position of Associate Music Director for The Choral Arts Society of Washington. Adelaide Boedecker, soprano, has been described as “emotionally transparent and beguiling of tone” (The San Francisco Chronicle). In the 2023-2024 season, she once again appeared at the Metropolitan Opera, covering the roll of Amore in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice. Additionally, Ms. Boedecker sang various leading roles with Santa Fe Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Sarasota Opera, Florida Grand Opera, and Opera Las Vegas, amongst other companies. Ms. Boedecker has also had the privilege of traveling the United States as the soprano soloist with many different symphony orchestras throughout her career. When beginning her singing journey, Ms. Boedecker was a studio artist with the Sarasota Opera. Michael Drapkin, clarinet, is an internationally acclaimed composer, arranger, author, and clarinetist known for reimagining how classical music can be experienced. His publications include the Symphonic Repertoire for the Bass Clarinet series and Extreme Transcription, which cemented his reputation as an iconoclast dedicated to expanding the orchestral canon through chamber orchestra adaptations. Drapkin has performed under esteemed conductors ranging from Leonard Bernstein to Seiji Ozawa and currently serves as Principal Bass Clarinetist with the Venice Symphony. He also leads the klezmer ensemble Yiddish Cowboys and has given masterclasses at Eastman, Juilliard and Northwestern.
