Many states and communities are working to develop and expand unarmed responses to people experiencing mental health, substance use and social vulnerability related crises. This requires a well-prepared workforce that currently does not exist at capacity. SAMHSA has developed guidelines for mobile crisis teams attached to clinical licensure and some recommended training topics. However, traditional clinical training and licensure does not guarantee crisis response skills, and there are simply not enough licensed clinicians interested in this work. We would argue, as community responder programs have demonstrated, that non-degreed responders with solid training and supervision can safely and effectively respond to crises in the community. Amy Watson, PhD of Wayne State University School of Social Work speaks at the Alternative Mobile Services Association 2025 Conference. Watson will discusses work being done to identify core competencies and skills, build training standards and curriculum, and create a recognized credential for alternative responders working on mobile crisis and community response teams. The goal is to remove barriers to workforce entry while ensuring the workforce has the necessary competencies and skills to provide mobile crisis and community response. Policy levers to support the development of this credentialed workforce will be discussed. The Alternative Mobile Services Association 2025 Conference took place June 2 & 3, 2025.
