In this episode, we visited the Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, just on the edge of Brisbane at Enoggera Reservoir. From here, Mount Nebo Road winds up into the D’Aguilar Range National Park — a scenic drive and a gateway to plenty of birding spots. The Discovery Centre itself is impressive, with an education centre, café, wedding venue and plenty of facilities. Even at 7 a.m., the car park was already busy, thanks mostly to the nearby Enoggera Reservoir. It’s only a short walk from the centre and is popular for swimming and kayaking — about $35 an hour if you want to hire one. We took the main walking track (the name was unpronounceable) and got a great view of the reservoir early on. The trail’s mostly flat and easy along the reservoir, but up to the ridge behind. We did take a “shortcut” that turned into a very steep climb — not my most popular decision of the day. Still, a good bit of cardio and about 15 flights’ worth of steps. Bird-wise, it was quiet: around 30 species, including Brush and Fantail Cuckoos, Spangled Drongos, and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos, but generally nothing stood out. For birding, I’d rate it a two. For a pleasant bush walk and coffee stop, a solid three. Until next time — happy birding!
