In this episode of Phlap, we are visiting the Moree Botanic Gardens, located on the outskirts of Moree next to the showgrounds. The gardens themselves are very new, with most of the plantings still small saplings. Right now, it feels a bit sparse, but give it a few years and I think this could become a really attractive spot, especially when things start flowering. Facilities are minimal at this stage – a couple of seats, a small shelter without seating, and a drinking fountain – but again, it’s early days. From a birding perspective, there was still plenty to enjoy. We saw lots of Crested Pigeons, which can look quite stunning in the right light, along with plenty of Pee Wees (Magpie Larks) and White-plumed Honeyeaters. Sacred Kingfishers were everywhere, at least ten by my count. We also spotted Channel-billed Cuckoos hassling ravens, and some fascinating behaviour from White-breasted Woodswallows around a nest. Overall, it’s a pleasant walk if you’re in town. Right now, I’d rate it modestly, but with time, this place has real potential. Until next time, happy birding.
