Step into the Miami Time Machine one more time as we open a portal over the far north end of Sunny Isles - a stretch once lined with motels that looked less like roadside stops and more like prototypes for the American future. From the Mercury Resort to the Suez, the Sahara, the Thunderbird, the Golden Nugget, the Tangiers, the Waikiki and finally the Carib - each one carried the optimism of the late fifties and early sixties, when architects sketched tomorrow with confidence and Miami embraced the idea that the future should feel fun, bold, and a little fantastical. Some of these places looked like they were drawn straight out of the Jetsons. The Carib should have been the cover art for a science fiction paperback. And the Waikiki - shown here both in its prime and final moments - capture the entire tragedy of this strip: a place built on imagination, demolished in seconds for another condominium tower. Their names echoed Las Vegas, and maybe that wasn't an accident. This was an era when America believed in spectacle, in reinvention, in the promise that the next decade would always be brighter than the last. These motels were monuments to that optimism. And yet, almost all of them were erased without hesitation - mowed down for economic expediency, with little thought given to the cultural flavor, the futurist spirit, or the architectural whimsy they carried. If you remember these motels, or if you've ever wondered what once stood at the edge of 180th Street, this transmission will hit you with nostalgia, wonder, and a touch of anger at what was lost. Thank you for traveling through time with me.
