It’s not every day you find a Chrysler that looks like it’s trying out for a role in a 1930s sci-fi comic. But here it is—the 2004 Chrysler Crossfire. A two-seat coupe built during DaimlerChrysler’s awkward but fascinating marriage, borrowing its bones from a Mercedes-Benz SLK, and wrapped in a body that’s part retro speedster, part 2000s fever dream.” “Underneath that long hood sits a 3.2L V6, rear-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual—yes, a manual—because this car didn’t just want to look different, it wanted to feel different.” “So was it misunderstood, overhyped, or something in between? Today on Neighborhood Car Reviews, we’re taking a deep dive into the Chrysler Crossfire—where art deco meets turn-of-the-century German engineering. Conceptualized in 2001 by Eric Stoddard and refined by Andrew Dyson, the Chrysler Crossfire made its debut at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. Production commenced in 2003 for the 2004 model year. Throughout its four-year production run, the Crossfire served as Chrysler’s Halo Car, captivating audiences with its striking design. The car’s design language was intentionally provocative, evoking strong emotions and sparking diverse reactions. The coupe’s distinctive Art Deco style, characterized by its boat tail shape, fastback rear glass, and wide fenders, exuded a heritage look reminiscent of the 1967 AMC Marlin. The Crossfire’s foundation was laid by Chrysler’s then-new merger with Daimler, which resulted in its use of the Mercedes-Benz R170 platform. This platform shared 80% of its components with the first-generation SLK roadster. The Crossfire was manufactured by Karmann in Ösnabruck, Germany, with the first car rolling off the line on February 3, 2003. Despite its initial success, the Crossfire faced challenges due to low sales and restructuring plans. Consequently, Chrysler discontinued the model after the 2008 model year, with the last Crossfire rolling off the assembly line on December 17, 2007.
