Anti-government protesters in Kiev topple Lenin statue

(8 Dec 2013) Anti-government protesters toppled a statue of Vladimir Lenin in central Kiev on Sunday, as tensions continue to mount across the Ukrainian capital. As the crowds cheered on, opponents of President Viktor Yanukovych took turns striking the fallen statue with a sledgehammer. Kristian Pavluk was among those watching. "A few minutes ago the monument of Lenin fell down thanks to the people who are here," she said. "And I think it happened because people are just tired of this government and all of the things which have happened in our country." The protesters oppose the close relationship between the Ukrainian government and Moscow, and are instead demanding stronger ties to the European Union. More than 100-thousand people are thought to have taken part in this latest mass rally.
