I do a warm-up like this before every basic and beginner line dance class I teach. This accomplishes several things: it starts them moving in time to the music in a group of people and it gets them used to listening to me and observing those around them. But the main purpose is to begin teaching them basic steps is a very casual, friendly environment. They are relaxed and have fun because it's "only" the warm-up, so there's no pressure. Because my beginner classes include those who have never danced before and those with months or years of experience, there are plenty of people on the floor for the newbies to follow. Even those who have never danced before find themselves dancing along with the crowd, and often, as was the case in this instance, they applaud at the end because they've realized it's not as hard as they thought it would be! I use music that's about 4-1/2 minutes long in the 100-110 BPM range. This song is Fly by Sugar Ray (clean version), which I edited to lengthen. During the warm-up, I try to do side, touches; side, kicks; side, heels; K steps; V steps; rocking chairs (sometimes with the half-turn option which you can see in this demo); progressive step-touches forward and back; and basics/vines/crosses. I ran out of time and left out hustle walks (three steps forward, kick, three steps back, touch), which I usually include. When I teach these steps later in dance patterns, I remind the students that they've already done the steps in the warm-up, and that we just put them together in a different sequence, yay!
