Full episode available at: https://www.smarttravels.tv/ Kapiti Island is a protected nature reserve located off the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The island is renowned for its biodiversity and conservation efforts and is home to a wide variety of native New Zealand bird species, including the little spotted kiwi, kaka parrots, takahe, and weka. Kapiti Island is also an important cultural site for Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. The arrival of human beings to New Zealand caused catastrophic declines in native bird species, some even hunted to extinction. But after decades of careful management and hard work, many of the country’s most endangered species are now thriving on Kapiti, free of predators.
