From Nothing to Jungle: 10 Mini Food Forests in 2.5 Years

HOW DOES A MINI FOOD FOREST EVOLVE OVER TIME? In this video, Luís Afonso walks through 10 Mini Food Forest plots at Quinta da Fornalha (Portugal), showing how the same 3×3 m Biggest Mini Forest module looks at very different stages of life — from 2.5 years old to just 1 week after planting. Moving from the oldest plot to the youngest, Luís explains what has been happening in each space: what trees and vegetables are growing there what kind of maintenance has been done what we’ve already harvested and how the system evolves as it matures This video was filmed in mid-October 2025, right after we completed the autumn maintenance work to prepare the forests for the colder season. During this work we focused on: Pruning trees and support species Mulching the soil with biomass Adding winter annual plants to the veggie walls Observing how the different plots respond at each stage Luís also shows a soil preparation experiment we are testing for very compacted soils. In this method, a composting area is created directly in the planting plot together with red wiggler worms, improve soil structure and generate fertility before establishing the next Mini Food Forest.
