This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Leisa has volunteered for eight years in many aspects of life at Pearson College, one of fourteen United World Colleges (UWC) around the world striving to make education a force to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Married to the Director of Pearson College, David Hawley, and the parent of two UWC alumni, she has been connected to the United World College movement for over 25 years. In her talk, Leisa applies her interest in explanatory models to investigate what makes United World Colleges so extraordinary. Leisa Weld has a PhD in statistics from Harvard University and has worked for many years in public health, public policy, employment discrimination, education, nutrition, and in court cases. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
