Headquarters being bombarded as night falls STORYLINE: At nightfall on Wednesday Israeli forces in Hebron were still bombarding the Palestinian security forces headquarters, where Palestinian gunmen had been holding out since the Israelis moved into the town early on Tuesday. It was the second straight day that heavy machine-gun fire had pounded the fortress-like Palestinian government compound and it was clearly taking its toll on the building's thick concrete walls. Israeli military officials said 150 Palestinians inside had surrendered since the army surrounded the fortress. Of the 40 to surrender Wednesday, 20 were top fugitives, they said, without indicating how many more might be inside. On Wednesday afternoon the Israelis brought in an armoured bulldozer which started tearing down walls on the perimeters of the compound. The army brought the fathers of four wanted men inside the compound to talk to their sons on megaphones to convince them to surrender. One father went inside and emerged with his son Maamoun Amr, a gunman who has been injured many times in recent clashes with Israelis. Meanwhile in Ramallah, a three day curfew was lifted for four hours early on Wednesday afternoon. Residents of the city rushed into the streets, and headed for crowded markets and food shops to stock up on much needed supplies. Throughout the West Bank at least 700-thousand Palestinians were confined to their homes by an Israeli imposed curfew as searches and arrests were carried out. Israeli troops have moved into seven of the eight main Palestinian cities and towns over the past week, imposing curfews, following a new Israeli policy of taking over Palestinian territory in retaliation for last week's terror attacks in which 26 Israelis died.
