It’s incredible how most of the elements that define a Mega Man game were already there from the very first title: a simple action side-scroller with themed stages, each one featuring its own gimmicks, stage hazards, and distinct enemies, offering unique challenges. The bosses are charismatic and interesting, with the system of gaining new abilities from each of them, the mechanic of choosing which stage to tackle, and the sequence of final stages. Everything is already here, the full formula was complete right from the first game and was later just expanded and polished in subsequent entries. Mega Man 1 is perhaps the simplest game in the series and, because of that, also one of the weakest. That said, it doesn’t mean it’s a bad game. On the contrary, its simplicity works in its favor, making it easy to enjoy for almost anyone, without major barriers, without mechanics that are hard to understand or overly punishing, especially when you take into account the option to use save states to preserve progress. Unfortunately, this version of the Legacy Collection, at least on my PC, has noticeable input delay. The difference becomes very obvious when I switch to an emulator, which has significantly less latency. From what I’ve seen, the Mega Man X collection is even worse in that regard. Among these collections, I spent more time with Legacy Collection 2 (playing 7 through 10) and the Zero/ZX Collection, but in those cases I didn’t test them on an emulator for comparison. If it’s anything like this one, it makes a big difference.
