Season four threw many people off of the clone Shiro theory. For the soul reason that he was able to pilot the Black Lion. Evidence is everywhere in season three for him being a clone. His hair was unnaturally long when we saw him in Galra captivity. He couldn't have been gone long enough for his hair to grow like that. He escaped fairly easily compared to last time too. Nobody went after him. The operation was called Kuron which means clone. Several remarks said by characters could be foreshadowing. Like what Pidge said about his memories in season two. Or what Sendak told him about being a part of the Galra empire. His identification code changed. Why do that unless they wanted to differentiate him from another Shiro. Same for his appearance change. The reason Black responded to him initially in season three was due to him feeling like he was the real Shiro. He still has the original's memories and personality. All that's needed in order to pilot a Lion is that a paladin matches their requirements. Which clone Shiro does. Lions can have more one than one paladin each.
