To help celebrate Petra’s 50th Anniversary, this is the 4th in a series of 7 live concert recordings taken chronologically from points within the “More Power To Ya” Tour in 1982-83. By this time, Petra had played 84 concerts on the tour, selling out nearly every concert. The night before this show they had standing-room-only with 2,200 in Detroit, and sadly had to turn hundreds more away at the door. “More Power To Ya” and “Never Say Die” were firmly entrenched in the Top Ten in album sales nationally. Petrafied Productions was producing over half of the concerts (selling out most of them) in areas where many experts had said the band would fail horribly. In the past moth, the band had added 24 more thousand watt par lamps to the existing 36 lights, as well as several more sound cabinets to increase coverage for the ever growing hall sizes. Three more road crew were added, and the band bought a used Greyhound bus as well as a used Ryder Truck to carry the increased gear. This concert in Columbus was produced by Mike Castle, and he was rewarded with a sell-out of 1,700. I remember him telling me he though he easily could’ve sold another 1,000 tickets. Just 7 months previously he had promoted them at the end of the “Never Say Die” Tour at a high school theater half the size, and drew 500. Everywhere the band appeared, the crowds were coming wearing ‘home made’ shirts, and hanging intricately designed welcome banners from the balconies of every auditorium. Each night, hundreds of official shirts, buttons, posters, and albums would be sold to the eager throngs. A fun addition to the concert proceedings began to occur nightly: after the band would tear down the house with their rendition of Argent’s “God Gave Rock and Roll To You,” Greg Volz would litigate the reasons (utilizing many scripture verses in the defense) why Petra played loud music. Bob Hartman would interrupt him by saying “Wait a minute…wait just a minute! What about backwards masking?!” He would then turn around and show a halloween clown mask tied to the back of his head. The crowd would laugh loudly at the ridiculousness of it. Then Greg would exclaim, “I’ve only got one thing to say about that…what are you lookin’ for the Devil for when you outta be lookin’ for the Lord?!” And the crowd would erupt in approval, because they were “in” on the joke because they had deciphered the backwards message the band had imbedded at the beginning of “Judas Kiss” on the latest album that posed that very question. But besides all the rocking celebration, the band ministered throughout each concert, and when Greg would present the case for salvation, often dozens, sometimes hundreds, of kids would come forward wanting to make commitments to discipleship. We had begun coordinating with local churches to provide counselors to encourage and pray with these kids and guide them towards good communities. We provided a Gospel of John and some other materials to encourage them in their newfound faith. This always made the closing “Worship Jam” all the more profound, and when Bob Hartman would play “The Doxology” to close the proceedings, there were not many dry eyes in the house. This recording is accompanied with images of my concert photos, press clippings, tour memorabilia, and other rarities from that era. I hope they help bring to this concert a joyous glimpse of the hard work by the band and the Petrafied Productions crew as you listen to these previously unreleased shows. Petra was Greg X. Volz on lead vocal/rhythm guitar; Bob Hartman on electric/acoustic guitar and backing vocal; John Slick on keys and backing vocal; Mark Kelly on bass and backing vocal; and Louis Weaver on drums.
