To help celebrate Petra’s 50th Anniversary, this is the first in a series of 3 live concert recordings taken chronologically from points within the “Not of This World Tour” in 1983-‘84. Building on the record-breaking success of the “More Power To Ya Tour,” which set over a hundred attendance records in markets all over North America or attendance at a Christian rock concert, the band embarked on the most ambitious tour of their career. They had recorded “Not of This World” in the summer of ’83, and preparations had been underway for months to have the entire schedule booked so that it could be promoted in advance via inserts inside the vinyl and cassette versions of the album. This proved quite successful, as many promoters sold out their concerts quite quickly once the album was released in October of ’83. We kicked-off the initial fall leg of the tour with two sold-out shows at the 1,200 seat Massey Auditorium at Belmont University in Nashville, then shot up through the Des Moines and Sioux City, IA for two sold out nights, before hitting the Twin Cities for two sold out shows with 4,000 total attendance. Then it was across the border for a run of 7 shows in western Canada, before heading back into the Pacific Northwest for wild packed shows in front of 2,000 and 3,200 respectively in Portland & Seattle, as well as other hyped crowds in Salem, Yakima, and Boise. That led the band to Colorado Springs, where they had played a year previously in front of 425 people. Promoter Robbie Marshall of Road Home Productions put them in downtown’s Palmer H.S. Auditorium, for this date, and the 1,400 seats sold out in advance. The kinetic anticipation from the energetic throng is evident from the moment the strains of “The 1812 Overture” can be heard when the house lights were dimmed. Moments later, on the opening power chords of “Stand Up,” the audience was blinded by dozens of white beams cutting though the haze representing spiritual warfare. It was blast-off from that point on through the rest of the concert, and that it sounds more like a packed arena than an auditorium. From there, that first leg continued with two sellouts at Denver’s historic Paramount Theater, then on to packed houses in North Platte and Lincoln, NE, Kansas City, and 2,800 at the 2,500 capacity Maryville University Arena in St. Louis. All in all, they played before over 40,000 in those first 22 cities, with 20 new attendance records being set for a Christian rock band. This recording is accompanied with images of my concert photos, press clippings, tour memorabilia, and other rarities from the “Not of This World” era. I hope they help bring to this concert a joyous glimpse of the hard work by the band and the Petrafied Productions crew as you listen to these previously unreleased shows. Petra was Greg X.
