This week was a lesson in balance. Kansas City — and the U.S. — had a lot going on this week. We started off strong with Monday Night Football on our air, then the U.S. Women’s National Team came to CPKC on Wednesday, and then Halloween on Friday. Throughout all of this, hundreds of thousands of our viewers were concerned about how to feed their families. And others still want to know how they can help. One of the hardest lessons I had to learn out of college was balancing the serious news with the uplifting news. Or, as we say in the biz, hard vs. soft news. I thought I needed to be serious all the time in order to be taken seriously. But viewers want to see themselves in a newscast — and that means giving them that uplifting news too. I have come to believe this also makes a newscast feel more authentic, becasue it better captures what it means to be human. We have so many emotions to balance on a daily basis. The newscast below is from Halloween — a day of fun, and the last day of SNAP benefits in the forseeable futue. Let me know what you think about how the two topics were weaved together! P.S. I have to give a special shoutout to Chief Meteorologist Bryan Busby for going along with my scheme to get an on-set costume on air!
