Last night, when we were young, we had ourselves a pretty good brass quintet, mostly members of the San Antonio Symphony. In 1976, we formed the quintet, including Pete Kline, not then in the symphony, as our trombonist. It was risky. The symphony management was not particularly fond of Pete (who was and is as nice a guy as any can be). We started out just getting together to play through things, for fun, but then we prepared and played a concert. The next season (1976-77), the quintet continued with Chuck Berginc, trumpet, joining us when Tom Booth went to play in the Dallas Symphony. The quintet in this recording is Bernie Nero and Chuck Berginc, trumpets, James Baker, horn, Peter Kline, trombone, and Mike Sanders, tuba. This is a live performance (with a few clams here and there). I still remember how Arthur Frackenpohl's Brass Quintet No. 1 tested us. Listening to it now, after all these years, I'm glad we took the time to polish it up. It's a really good piece of music. The audio shows its origins as a cassette tape, then a copy of a cassette, etc. The tape stutters a bit now and then, but that's what 41 year old cassette tapes do.
