She made the remarks yesterday during the Independence and Democracy Forum 2026 organised by the Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice in partnership with other stakeholders. The forum formed part of activities commemorating the nation’s independence and focused on governance, democracy, and the future of the republic. Speaking at the event, Hon. Sisawo highlighted the increasing prices of basic commodities, the high cost of living, and low salaries as key factors contributing significantly to poverty in The Gambia. She noted that many families continue to struggle to meet their daily needs, particularly young people and low-income earners. According to her, the economic pressures facing households are making it difficult for many citizens to sustain decent living standards. She stressed that urgent interventions are needed to address rising prices, improve wages, and create more economic opportunities for young people. The National Youth Parliament Speaker called on policymakers and stakeholders to prioritise youth-focused and people-centred policies that will ease economic hardship and reduce poverty. She further urged government and partners to work collaboratively to ensure that development efforts translate into tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary Gambians.
