History of the Chinese in Southeast Asia

For more than five centuries, Chinese migrants have crossed the seas to Southeast Asia in search of opportunity, survival, and a better life. From the ports of Fujian and Guangdong, countless men—and later families—journeyed south to the lands they called Nanyang, the Southern Ocean. Today, their descendants form one of the largest and most influential Chinese diaspora communities in the world. In this video, we explore the history of the Chinese in Southeast Asia, from early maritime trade during imperial China to the great waves of migration in the 18th and 19th centuries. Why did so many Chinese leave their homeland? Why are Hokkien-speaking communities so prominent in Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines, while Teochew communities became influential in Thailand? And how did Chinese migrants build thriving communities across the region despite the many hardships they faced? We also look at how Chinese communities developed differently across Southeast Asia. In some countries, such as Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, many Chinese migrants gradually integrated into the broader population. In others, particularly Malaysia and Singapore, Chinese communities remained culturally distinct while playing major roles in national life. From tin mines and trading houses to temples, schools, and clan associations, Chinese migrants helped shape the economic and cultural landscape of Southeast Asia. Today, more than 30 million people of Chinese descent live across the region, forming a vital bridge between cultures, economies, and histories.
