Just when we thought Van Zyl’s Pass was the big challenge of the trip, the Hoarusib River bed had other plans. Fully loaded and tired from the descent, we found ourselves bogged down in water-soaked sand with the midday sun beating down and no easy exit in sight. In one of the wildest moments of the trip, the JB74 Suzuki Jimny managed to recover the FJ Cruiser using a Rusty’s kinetic rope – proof that preparation and the right gear beat size every time. It took digging, recovery tools, teamwork and a good dose of stubbornness to claw our way out, and then came the race against the sun to reach the next campsite and meet up with Rachel and Nicci.
