PRESS RELEASE Kargil Observes Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, Commemorates 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda Kargil, Ladakh: Kargil today joined the rest of the nation in celebrating Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas, marking the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda with a vibrant and culturally rich programme at the Syed Mehdi Memorial Auditorium Hall. The event honoured the legacy of the tribal icon and highlighted the rich heritage and contributions of tribal communities across Ladakh and the nation. The programme began with floral tributes to Bhagwan Birsa Munda, followed by the participation of school children, public representatives, ICDS workers and members of the public, demonstrating widespread community involvement. Hon’ble MP Ladakh, Haji Hanifa Jan, presided over the event as the Chief Guest, while Executive Councillor LAHDC Kargil, Syed Mujtaba, attended as the Guest of Honour. The event was also attended by, Kunzaes Angmo, Director Social & Tribal Welfare, UT Ladakh, Tahir Hussain Zubdavi, Director CAPD, Imteeaz Kacho, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, Iftikhar Hussain, Joint Director Finance, Dr. Jaffar Khan, Director, Tribal Research Institute Ladakh, Councillors and other prominent officials and citizens. Earlier, the Chief Guest visited various stalls set up by tribal communities and government departments, showcasing traditional products, local crafts, agricultural produce and welfare initiatives. This exhibition reflected the cultural diversity, skills and economic potential of tribal groups in Ladakh. A detailed presentation on the life and legacy of Bhagwan Birsa Munda was delivered by Dr. Konchok Paldan, University of Ladakh. The Ranthaq Theater Group captivated the audience with a skit portraying the inspiring journey and struggle of Birsa Munda, receiving warm appreciation. In his address, MP Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan applauded the Tribal Research Institute and the Department of Tribal Affairs, UT Ladakh, for organizing a series of impactful programmes across the Union Territory. He emphasized the importance of spreading awareness about tribal welfare schemes under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and expressed hope that these initiatives would benefit the people of Ladakh, the majority of whom belong to tribal communities. Speaking to the media, MP Hanifa Jan also commended the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for celebrating the 150th Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda at a grand national level through a 15-day commemoration campaign. Dr. Jaffar Khan, Director TRI Ladakh, informed that numerous activities were carried out during the 15-day observance, including school-level programmes, public outreach campaigns, expert lectures, and the First Ladakh Tribal Sports Conclave, ensuring that the message and legacy of Birsa Munda reached every corner of Ladakh. The programme concluded with participants witnessing the live address of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, adding a moment of national connection and pride to the occasion.
