Suspect sought as teen sent to hospital, commuters flee Jan 23, 2009 04:30 AM Paola Loriggio and Christina Commisso Staff Reporters TORONTO STAR Carrie Wiebe had just stepped out of a subway car onto the platform at Osgoode station yesterday morning when she heard three gunshots. At first, Wiebe who was on her way to a free noon-hour concert at the Four Seasons Centre opera house thought the noises were metallic clangs from construction work. "Then I thought, `That sounds like gunshots,'" she said. Panicked by the shots, the crowd rushed for the exits, pouring out of the station onto University Ave. "We just ran for our lives," said a visibly shaken Wiebe. Once outside, the Rosedale resident called 911. It was 10:47 a.m. The wounding of a teenager on a subway platform brought the city's gun problem to the heart of downtown in the middle of a business day. While passing office workers gawked, heavily armed Emergency Task Force officers in their military-style garb charged down the steps of the station at University Ave. and Queen St. W. Yellow police tape cordoned off the station entrances until late afternoon while officers scoured the platform and tunnels for evidence. Service on a portion of the University-Spadina line was cancelled until about 3:30 p.m., forcing subway users to take shuttle buses or walk to the Yonge line. Afternoon rush-hour commuters had to use other stations because Osgoode station was closed until almost 5 p.m. Immediately after the morning shooting, police officers responding to several 911 calls from Osgoode station found a 19-year-old man collapsed on the mezzanine, shot in the stomach and thigh. The victim was taken to St. Michael's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. As of last night, police continued to search for one suspect, described as male, black, between 6-foot and 6-foot-2 and about 185 lbs. The suspect was last seen wearing black pants, a black parka with a fur-trimmed hood, and a black Blue Jays ball cap bearing the team's new logo. He was also wearing black Nike Air Jordan running shoes with "Nike System" emblazoned on the side. Four minutes after they were called to the scene, police officers arrested a man outside the station at 10:51 a.m. and took him to 52 Division for questioning. At 2:05 p.m. after viewing the security video from Osgoode station, the officers determined the man was not the shooter and released him. Police say he may have been part of the group travelling with the suspect. The victim was also travelling with that group on a southbound train, said Supt. Hugh Ferguson of 52 Division. A fight broke out as they stepped out onto the central platform of Osgoode station, he said. Wiebe recalled, "As soon as the doors opened, we got off and then there were shots." Police said at least three shots were fired on the platform and the fight continued to the mezzanine level before the victim collapsed. Ferguson said one witness, a woman, stayed with the victim after he was shot. Calling yesterday's subway shooting "outrageous" and shocking, Toronto police Chief Bill Blair said the offenders were downright dumb to spar in such an open, heavily surveilled public space. "It's a stupid place to commit such a crime, not only because they're more likely to be caught but because it endangers a lot of people," Blair said. Noting all the "eyes and ears in the TTC system," Blair said he is confident police will catch the perpetrators.
