Presider: Fr. Brian Walker, O.P. Parish: Dominican Friars TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A proclamation of the holy gospel according to St. Luke. Glory to you o Lord. Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them - do you think that they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!" And he told them this parable: "There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit but found none, he said to the gardener, 'For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?' He said to him in reply, 'Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not, you can cut it down.'" The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Take off your shoes because the ground on which you stand is holy ground. These are the words that Moses hears coming from the bush that was burning but not consumed. These words are not new to us because we have heard them many, many times over the course of the years. But have we ever stopped to think about what they truly mean? Moses removed his shoes because he took these words to heart. And that meant doing exactly what the Lord said. In many cultures this is still the practice. A good Muslim will always remove his shoes before prayer because he knows what this means. It would be unheard of to enter the home of an Asian without removing one's shoes. It's just not considered sanitary. Many of us would be afraid to remove our shoes. First we would think about our socks. Stockings. Or even how our feet would look. We would also think about maybe the smell and we would probably get embarrassed. Moses didn't care about any of these things because he knew that he had to follow the words of the Lord. It means having respect. In other words, we could and maybe even should, take off our shoes before entering the house of someone out of respect and most especially upon entering a house of prayer. We wouldn't think of going to bed with our shoes on. We wouldn't want at all knowing what we stepped in during the course of the day. Our customs they're different and we don't even think about it. But, let us not lose sight of the fact that we should respect one another. During this third week of lent, let us pray even more fervently not only for ourselves but for the other. Amen.
