This video shows you how to check and refill the engine oil on your 2012–2017 Volkswagen Tiguan. The 2.0L turbocharged engine in this generation is known for being a high-performance unit, but it’s also known for consuming a bit of oil between services. We’ll show you how to read the dipstick correctly and which specific "European Formula" oil you need to keep your turbocharger healthy. This maintenance guide was filmed on a 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (First Generation / Limited) and applies to: 2009–2017 Volkswagen Tiguan (All trims with the 2.0T TSI engine) (Also applies to the 2018 Tiguan Limited) Specifications you need to know: Oil Type: Full Synthetic 5W-40 or 5W-30 that carries the VW 502 00 approval. Note: Do not use standard "off-the-shelf" oil unless it explicitly lists the VW 502 00 spec on the back of the bottle. Oil Capacity: Approximately 4.9 Quarts (4.7 Liters) with a filter change. Service Interval: Every 10,000 miles or 12 months, though many enthusiasts recommend every 5,000–7,500 miles for better turbo longevity. Steps Covered: Preparation: Parking on a level surface and letting the engine sit for at least 5–10 minutes so the oil can drain back into the pan for an accurate reading. Locating the Dipstick: Finding the bright orange or yellow ring-pull handle at the front of the engine (near the radiator). The Reading: Pulling the dipstick, wiping it clean, re-inserting it fully, and checking the "cross-hatched" area. Top of cross-hatch: Full. Bottom of cross-hatch: 1 quart low. Topping Off: Removing the oil fill cap on the top-left of the engine. Why you should add only half a quart at a time and wait a minute before re-checking to avoid overfilling. The Cap Seal: Ensuring the oil cap is tightened until it "clicks" or sits flush to prevent vacuum leaks that can cause a rough idle.
