It's MATES in Construction Fly the Flag week and we have partnered with their dedicated and compassionate team in continuing to SPARK CHANGE. Our upcoming webinar will be discussing their latest comprehensive research on the state of mental health and well-being within New Zealand's construction industry, sharing key insights from over 2,000 workers across New Zealand. We have a compelling line-up of guest-speakers, Dr Chris Bowden (Director of Research), Dr Lauren Donnan (Research and Innovation Manager) and James Sendall (Field Officer) who will be presenting MATES' newest research. The research identified five workplace-based psychosocial stressors common to and affecting all worker groups. These stressors will be outlined in more detail within the webinar. The construction sector is a cornerstone of NZ's economy, contributing significantly to our nation's growth. However, it also presents significant challenges to the well-being of its workforce. Suicide is a significant issue in the NZ construction industry and data indicates an increasing trend of death by suicide among construction industry workers, with an average of one construction worker lost to suicide every five days in 2023, addressing these challenges and understanding particularly vulnerable groups within our workforce is more urgent than ever. The MATES program effectively transforms the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours of construction industry workers. Conservatively estimating that the MATES program saves one worker's life each year then MATES generates $14.2 million in savings to society per annum. Quantifying the economic cost can help raise awareness and inform and support funding for preventive actions. Sadly the emotional toll on family and friends left behind is devastating and everlastingly. MATES have just released a research report (with three pieces of research) available to pre-read. You may have some questions after reading the report, so the good news is there will be time for a Q&A session during our webinar. How can you continue to ignite hope and SPARK CHANGE? We all have a role to play, register below and you'll automatically be sent a zoom link. The webinar is on Thursday 26th September, 12pm to 1pm.
