Indiana Music History Project – Oral History Highlight with Lawrence Clark III Recorded September 5, 2025 at the Indiana Music History Project Museum, Indianapolis, IN The Indiana Music History Project (IMHP) presents this highlight from our oral history interview with jazz musician and educator Lawrence Clark III. In this excerpt, Lawrence reflects on growing up on Indiana Avenue and the influence of his father, a jazz drummer who introduced him to the music at an early age. He recalls a defining childhood moment—being awakened late at night to watch jazz on television, including a performance by the Ramsey Lewis Trio—that helped set him on a lifelong musical path. Lawrence also shares his philosophy of music-making, explaining why he often says, “I’m not a drummer, I’m a musician.” He describes approaching the drum set melodically, listening for tone, pitch, and harmony in drums and cymbals, and treating rhythm as a fully expressive musical voice. This Interview Highlight offers just one story from Lawrence Clark III’s journey through Indianapolis’s rich jazz tradition. The Complete Interview is also available at IndianaFound.org/Lawrence-Clark-III. Part of the Amazing Indiana Music Stories series, with support from the Allen Whitehill Clowes Charitable Foundation, this highlight offers a glimpse into Lawrence Clark III’s life as a musician, educator, and bearer of Indiana Avenue’s jazz legacy.
