The Japanese maples were peaking with fall hues and the mighty Sho River was flowing with green water as we walked through the ancient, colorful Japanese village of Shirakawa. We enjoyed the soothing sounds of the centuries old irrigation canals that feed the rice farms and thatch-roofed homes. Shirakawa is a village located in Ōno District, Gifu Prefecture, Japan. It is best known for being the site of Shirakawa-gō, a small, traditional village showcasing a building style known as gasshō-zukuri. Together with Gokayama in Nanto, Toyama, it is one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. We took a bus from Takayama.
