Monday was a special day at the Conroe Police Department, and one that a young lady named Lauryn Williams will never forget. The Make-A-Wish Foundation approached Conroe Police for assistance after Lauryn’s mother told them she was obsessed with the reality series C.O.P.S. and its theme song. With the help of a small army of volunteers and contributors from Montgomery County Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack to multiple local businesses and a large number of Conroe Police Officers, Lauryn Williams became an Honorary Conroe Police Officer, complete with uniform, badge, and a swearing-in ceremony. A white stretch limo delivered Lauryn to a cheering crowd of uniformed officers at the Conroe Police Department Monday morning. The special guest was taken inside where Conroe Police Chief Philip Dupuis said the department was excited to have her and called the event “another example of the men and women of (the Conroe Police) department and how (they) care about the community.” Dupuis pinned the badge on Lauryn and welcomed her “to the force” as the roomful of officers cheered, saying it was a “blessing to have Officer Williams” on their team. After being sworn in, Officer Lauryn Williams was assigned to her training partner, Officer Sutton who handles a K-9. The new officer got to ride in the K-9 patrol vehicle and participate in a mock low-speed pursuit, complete with a foot chase and K-9 deployment. Officer Williams even had the pleasure of handcuffing the suspect. She also explored a SWAT van and went for a ride on a PHI Air Medical helicopter. Commissioner Noack also spoke at the event, thanking everyone who helped make the event possible. “We’re incredibly blessed to live in a community where we can come together and show our respect for all of the men and women that live here, and to give officer Williams this day that she so deserves,” he said. “Lauryn, we want this day to be your day, and we want it be very special.” CPD Sgt. James Waller, referred to as the “point man” on the project, said it was an honor and a privilege to be involved. Some others whose generosity made Lauryn’s day special were the Conroe Police Officers Association; PHI Air Medical; Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish; Joe’s Pizza and Pasta; Montgomery Bake House; Conroe Welding Supply; Academy Sports and Outdoors; Conroe Flowers; and Coca Cola. Sgt. Waller said Make A Wish contacted him about making Lauryn an honorary officer and it came together easily, thanks to the community’s generosity with their time, money and products. Janice Thigpen, Make A Wish volunteer, said the foundation started in 1980 when a special young boy wanted to be an Arizona Highway Patrolman and a man named Tommy Austin made it happen in a way similar to what was done for Lauryn. Thigpen said the foundation is excellent for donors who are concerned about how their contributions are spent because they have “very low overhead” with the overwhelming majority of funds going to make wishes come true for the children.
